Green Delight

I'm sharing more fruits of my research for the store again with you today. You may know Rubie Green, a textile company that specializes in glam, girly and green. I was delighted to find that they have an organic bedding line now too! Great sheets, in my opinion, are a must have. There's much to be said for crisp white linens but a great pattern can dress up any bedroom. Keep in mind that sleeping in organic sheets ensure a good nights rest as they haven't been steeped in formaldehyde during manufacturing, or soaked up pesticides in the field.

In the Kitch

I've always had this thing for textiles. I love pillows, towels, sheets, tea towels, napkins, etc... You can introduce colour, pattern, texture and interest so easily and creatively using fabrics... not to mention all the great DIY opportnities with a great fabric and a sewing machine! I've been looking for some cute kitchen textiles for the store, and I thought I'd post a few of my finds here on PGD. Use them for a great kitchen makeover on a dime!

Your Own Backyard...

Okay, so it's been a while! I've been told many times how much work it is to start your own business, but until you've lived it, I don't think you can realize just how true that is! It's amazing...time seems to funnel down some black hole in my life right now...but I'm loving every minute. I wanted to make my first post back on the job about the store, but its just not quite there yet. We're open and all, but I'm waiting for some key things to arrive so I'm going to hold off sharing it with you for a few more days.......

IN THE MEANTIME...

Don't you love when you discover something totally amazing in your own 'backyard' that you never could have dreamed was there? This is exactly what's happened to me. Opening a new business has been great, I've met so many people. Of them is North on 60, a fantastic company that specializes in green design and construction. They are one of a handful of companies that are certified as FSC Recycled - an international designation that means their materials come from a previous life. How amazing!

These guys do a little of everything, from furniture, design, new builds or renos...but what struck me most was their sophisticated style with more than a little European flair. A little steel, a little reclaimed wood... call it 'urban rustic' if you will, and to make it even better, its green. It describes my design sense perfectly, which must be why I'm so attracted to them! Perhaps they say it best:

"Waste Not.

Our business spans the entire life cycle - from forest management, to design/build, to restoration, and everything in between. We're involved every step of the way because our philosophy is fundamentally holistic - and frankly, we love it all.

How amazingly wonderful was all that?!

Excuse the long post, but I had a major itch in my fingers, so to speak. In other words, I'm glad to be back. Also, this post about local talent has inspired me to feature some of the other great stuff in my backyard. A reader challenged me to feature other great green design and businesses from the area, so if you're reading this now...keep reading in the next few weeks for more. Setting up my Store

A few of you may have noticed that I've been a little scarce around PGD. I am putting some very long hours in setting up my store, Sustain, and have simply run out of waking hours to pay PGD due attention. As a result, I'm just letting you know that I'm still thinking about you, and not to worry, I have a long lists of post ideas for when the store is set up. At the very least, some photos of the finished product!

Yianni Doulis Twig Lights

I came across these on Yianni Doulis' site, the architect husband and project collaborator of the fab Jessica Helgerson - it was love at first sight! The lamps are handcrafted and made of peeled vine maple branches. Such a perfect way to add a little nature and whimsy to your room!

Wary Meyers - Vintage Design

I first came across this photo on Desire to Inspire, then I found it on Domino's (which is sadly no more) website, and since I have seen it time and again. Imagine my surprise when, during a search for other green designers, I came across Wary Meyers, the firm responisible for said photo! This is actually their own home - a 'constant work in progress', as they say - how true of any home! I admire these guys- they can be called green because they decorate exclusively with vintage stuff! I have never come across anything like it! Their homes have a distinct feel - not stuffy "designer", but comfy, lived-in and real. I love it! While the look may not appeal to all, you can really appreciate the individuality of their work, and how hard they must have to scour the markets for such vintage scores!

Vintage Friday - The Old Cinema

Lately I have a thing for vintage industrial filing cabinets and banks of drawers - mostly because I'm looking for display material for my store. I love The Old Cinema - they have the most amazing selection of vintage industrial furniture. I also hate them because their stuff is out of my price-range, and its waaaaay too far away (UK)! Oh well. I can still admire - the only problem now is that my standards are way too high! At the very least, I decided to feature the most drool-worthy items today for Vintage Friday, just to give you all something to lust for...

Pure Green Living - Barb from Knack!

I'm really excited for this one today! Its no secret that I love Barb and everything she does at her store...you can see an earlier post I wrote about her fabulous work here. So I was really excited when she agreed to submit some material for Pure Green Living, a series on Pure Green Design that documents individual and unique acts of green. No matter how small, I'm hoping to inspire others to find little ways to make your life greener! So, without any further ado...here's Barb on living green:

"I live in Greenville, SC and run my own little studio called knack where I take pieces of furniture that are unloved and transform or recycle them into useful pieces of art to love and appreciate for years to come. I don't claim to be the best at living green, but this is one small way that I can keep furniture and other recyclables out of the landfill and do my part to help cut down on mass production."
